Mauricio Pochettino gives opinion on Tottenham's Premier League title chances. Mauricio Pochettino has given up on Tottenham's lingering hopes of sustaining a title challenge after watching his team lose 2-0 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge of Wednesday night.
A second-half strike from Pedro and a late own-goal from full-back Kieran Trippier were enough to see Spurs lose for the eighth time this season and the second time in five days, following Saturday's 2-1 defeat away at Burnley .
It leaves Tottenham nine points off the pace in the title race with ten games to play, and seemingly now unable to catch leaders Liverpool and champions Manchester City .
And Pochettino, who faces an FA charge after confronting referee Mike Dean at the end of Saturday's defeat at Turf Moor, conceded that, as far as the championship is concerned, the game is up for Spurs.
“In the small details we lose," he said after his side's defeat at Stamford Bridge. "We made mistakes and lost the game, that is why we are disappointed, we weren’t capable of playing our way.
“Chelsea had one shot on target and one goal and we didn’t shoot - its difficult that way to win and we weren’t solid enough. In the small details the result was decided for Chelsea.
“The competition will put us in our place. It’s a ten-month competition, not just three or four months. We are disappointed now.
“After Burnley I said it was difficult, and tonight makes it impossible to fight Man City and Liverpool.
“Only they can win the league - we must fight to win games and to be fair.”
Tottenham will now turn their attention to their Champions League last-16 second leg outing against Borussia Dortmund in Germany, whom they lead 3-0 from the first leg at Wembley earlier in February.
Pochettino will also be keen to ensure his team secure a return to next year's competition by shoring up their place in the Premier League's top four.
Spurs sit third, four points ahead of Arsenal in fourth and five ahead of Manchester United .
